The fact of spontaneous recovery, also known as the placebo effect, is now one of the best-established effects known to modern scientific medicine. Integrative medicine recognizes this and ensures that patients have the benefit of a placebo effect that they are surely entitled to expect, rather than it being negated by the unnecessary use of drugs to mask the symptoms alone. Further, integrative medicine induces and promotes the body's natural healing abilities by identifying and removing the lifestyle factors that originally provoked the patient’s chronic condition.
Negligence of the above fact does patients substantial damage and can even have a nocebo effect, and because of this, pathology responds better when a holistic approach is taken and people are treated as persons rather than as biochemical machines.
